Message from the CEO Regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Washington County Visitors Association sign on a building

Hospitality Industry Partner,

As you are aware the coronavirus (COVID-19), outbreak has impacted international travel, and we are now beginning to see decline in domestic overnight travel to Washington County.  We have been monitoring the situation since mid-January.

The WCVA is committed to keeping our partners and stakeholders informed on the latest information related to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impact on the industry, as well as any adjustments we are making to our marketing activities.

Washington County/Tualatin Valley remains open for business.

To date, the WCVA remains cautiously optimistic and we will continue to market the destination and encourage visitation to Washington County.

Recently, representatives from the WCVA exhibited at the Outdoor Travel Show in Vancouver, BC, participated in the Receptive Tour Operator (RTO) Summit (February 25-26), and partnered with Travel Oregon on its annual Canadian Media Mission (February 25-28).

The WCVA will be at the Seattle Bike and Outdoor Travel Show (March 7-8) promoting Tualatin Valley’s robust cycling trails and outdoor recreation.

Additionally, we are continuing to advertise the destination on digital and in print platforms.  We have established a reduced advertising schedule but will not reduce our advertising schedule or spending at this moment in time.

While we have remained proactive in promoting and marketing Tualatin Valley, several scheduled sales missions and marketplaces that were to take place this spring have been postponed to late summer 2020 due to COVID 19:

  • Go West Summit (Portland, Oregon); originally scheduled for March 2020 moved to late August 2020
  • Brand US China Sales Mission (Beijing, China); originally scheduled for March 2020;  no rescheduled date available
  • Active America China Summit (San Diego, CA): originally scheduled for March 2020; moved to August 2020
  • ITB (Shanghai, China); originally scheduled for May 2020; no rescheduled date available

To date, Brand USA’s planned Japan Sales Mission in Tokyo and Osaka in June 2020 has been paused.

Finally, local immigrant communities and communities of color throughout the region have experienced acts of racism and xenophobia and loss of business due to myths surrounding COVID-19, according to Multnomah County officials.  We encourage partners to report any instances of discrimination or bias crimes to the Oregon Department of Justice (learn more here).

We understand that things are happening at rapid pace, and we want you to be assured that we are keeping an eye out on this ever-changing situation and will keep you up-to-date on any changes. All of us at the WCVA hope that you all remain in good health and that there is minimal impact to your business.
